A Guide to College Decisions for the Confused

A Guide to College Decisions for the Confused Unlike many of my high school friends, I never had a “top choice” school. I knew I was interested in pursuing a career in business, but I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to major in. I’ll be the first to admit that when it came time to choosing which schools I wanted to apply to, I didn’t have the most methodical approach. I kept the suggestions of my parents and college counselor in mind, but for the most part, I was lost. The idea of Illinois was exciting because it represented the unknown. I could leave my safe bubble of California, venture off to the Midwest, and make the most of four years in a college town. That’s what eventually happenedâ€"with many more unanticipated ups and downs, of course. I came to Illinois unsure if it was the school for me, but that didn’t end up mattering much. So many people are fixated on whether or not a school is the perfect “fit.”  I think the more important question to ask is if you can make it a place for yourself. Where do you see yourself growing the most? Where do you think you’ll have the best support system as you pursue your goals? Because no matter where you end up, you’ll have to start from scratch. To this day, I can’t say Illinois is the absolute only school out there for me, but I do know I’ve done a lot of growing up over my three years as an Illini and I’m really proud of my time here. I didn’t have much clarity when I was making my own college decision, but hopefully this post reaches some of you fellow lost souls. Contrary to popular belief, not everyone has a “top choice,” and that’s okay. Go with your gut, and give it your best shot. Ria Class of 2018 I'm studying both Finance and Information Systems and Information Technology in the Gies College of Business. I’m from Los Altos, California.

Personal Narrative- Pitching at my Softball Game and...

This feeling in my nose tickles throughout. I let out a loud sneeze. I would be lying to you if I did not tell you it was a clean dry sneeze. The dirt from the ground tingled in my nose again and I let out another sneeze. The air was warm but dry the kind of weather that did not know if it wanted to be a warm winter day or a cold spring afternoon. When the wind blew, even just a little bit, it was like an orange dirt tornado out of the movie, The Wizard of Oz going everywhere. I closed my eyelids so tight I start to see textures in neon colours in the inside of my lids. Tighter and tighter, I shut them to assure I would not get dirt in them. When I felt the wind stop blowing, I opened my eyes slowly and saw I was not in Kansas but†¦show more content†¦I stayed on the mound even when there were three outs. I belonged to both sides. At this point during practice, I could feel my muscles in my arm starting to ache from the strenuous exercise I was putting on my arm just through a practice. After every inning my coach would look up at me through his baseball cap squinting. He always said the same line, â€Å" Janie, you want me to give this a go?† I brushed him off and continued doing what I was there for. I felt if I would walk away then it would be a book missing a couple chapters. After the ‘game’ was finished, I stood at the first base line and watched the losing team doing laps. This concept of running because you lost always made me think. I tried to incorporate this into everyday life. If you failed a game of red-rover or you did poorly on a test, would this be an incentive to do better. Could you really look at this as something more then a punishment? Running your sins away. Maybe this view on life is closer to me then I think. In the Jewish religion we have a day of repentment, Yom Kippur, which occurs once a year. This holiday gives you a clean slate for all the mistakes you’ve made but maybe on an everyday stand you need to make sacrifices to yourself to have this pure slate once again. Instead of looking at the team who loses running after the game as a punishment maybe it’s a way to cle anse your mind and forget your mistakes, to start over fresh. I felt weird just standing there and

Welfare The Governments Failure Essay - 1330 Words

This outrageous amount of money proves that welfare will lead United States into debt. The original intent of current welfare benefits has failed; therefore the national welfare system must be reformed. To fully understand how to reform the welfare system Americans must know what the history of welfare is, illegitimate births’ obvious connection to crime and welfare, how welfare has failed to keep the poverty rate down, the great problem of dependency, and finally what reforms must be made. But there are many reasons why the ci tizens can criticize social welfare, and at the same time still uphold and emphasize the United States caring spirits toward the unfortunate. But before the nation can fix social welfare we must look at what is wrong with it (Gentry). Welfare is a massive fault in the United States Government system. But it can be fixed through careful examination and diagnosis. The worst kind of parenting for the children in being born out of wedlock, but forty percent of births in 2012 alone were out-of-wedlock, and over seventy percent for African Americans (Clegg). The reason for all these illegitimate births is welfare. It reassures the single mothers that they will be able to support themselves. Micheal Tanner of Cato Institute reports â€Å"†¦the evidence of a link between the availability of welfare and out-of-wedlock births is overwhelming.
